The Heart

They said she could call upon the dead,
And bring them back home to you,
That she could save your loved ones;
Rumors are not always true.

Life for her was harsh,
For all alone was she,
A young girl,
Left to guard the key.

She was born on a calm sea,
Destined to play a part,
From the moment the sky turned red,
In the keeping of the heart.

She was the meaning of beauty,
With locks of ebony,
Eyes like the ocean deep,
And skin so bright to see.

The key was hers alone,
To guard it as she may,
To give to the one she deemed worthy,
Who loved her for a day.

Many came, many went,
But none could she find,
Able to take the heart,
And leave their life behind.

Some called it a dirty trick,
Others really tried,
But at the end of the day,
She would hold the key and sigh.

Many moons went by,
Until one day he came,
She saw something in him,
That wasn’t quite the same.

Delighted was she by the day’s events,
For the way he loved her was bliss,
The lonely girl could finally be,
Enchanted by his kiss.

When the sun began to slip beneath the waves,
She gave him the key,
The key that held the secret of the heart,
And told him not to grieve.

Now her task was done,
Her time on earth was spent,
Her soul left silently,
And up to heaven was sent.

Her lover watched her leave,
With a tear in his eye,
He clutched the key in his grasp,
At least the heart wouldn’t die.

He found the chest that kept the heart,
And opened it quickly,
To stare in wonder at the sight,
That no one would believe.

A golden figure of a heart,
Lay on soft feathers within,
And inside was a letter,
That told of a great sin.

How men had ravaged,
Plundered and robbed,
Killed and destroyed,
Leaving the innocent’s to sob.

But there was also good news,
That there was a light,
In the midst of the darkness,
That was just and right.

The man reached inside,
His hand bringing up the familiar book,
The pages crisp and clean,
The book that had been sorely overlooked.

The parables and stories were wonders to behold,
The words of wisdom so reliable,
This was the heart that he held;
The Bible.
